5/6/22: Rowing News: On to Poland and Selection Camp For NSR II Top Performers

After their race in the men’s double, Cardno said, “Racing was good. JP and I have been working on a lot of things back home with the lightweight and today was just executing that to the best of our ability. I think we’re stoked about that. I think our plan is to stick with the double, but we’ll talk to Peter, but I think that is the plan.”

TRC HP head coach Peter Mansfeld later explained that the program will race at World Cup II with Kohler and Vitas in the women’s double, Cardno and Kirkegaard in the men’s double, Zach Heese and Jasper Liu in the lightweight men’s double, and Jimmy McCullough in the men’s single.

5/3/22: Rowing News: Two Quiet Finals on Day One of NSR II

Just before the start of the men’s heavy double time trial Tuesday morning at National Selection Regatta II on Mercer Lake, Jasper Liu and Zack Heese were munching on breakfast sandwiches — peanut butter and jelly for Liu, straight peanut butter for Heese.

They were the only two athletes on the first day of NSR II eating with 30 minutes to go before launching their boat. But they were also the only two of the 14 men’s heavy doubles to have had to make weight.

The thing was, Liu and Heese were also rowing in the lightweight men’s double, and the event — as well as the women’s lightweight double — was uncontested. They wanted to make sure they could race all week and test themselves in side-by-side racing as the event moved on toward Friday’s finals.

Ben Davison and Kara Kohler took big steps towards making the 2022 US Team today, with both of them winning their finals at Sarasota to stake their claims to provisional team berths.

Kara Kohler also picked up in 2022 where she left off in '21, as the fastest women's single in the US. After winning the US Olympic trials and representing the US in the women's single in Tokyo, Kohler is still at the head of the field in the US.

"I think we're happy to see that result," said Liu. "I think we put in the work this winter and it's nice to see a payoff, for me and Zach and Jimmy [James McCullogh]."

For Liu, it wasn't surprising that four of today's eight semis were won by athletes training at the Texas Rowing Center in Austin.

"We have we have a great group, it's a lot of fun to train every day. We're not there to just see how fast you can go, we're there to do a job and every day I'm here because I want to go to the Olympics and do well next time.

"The culture [at TRC] is huge. We have great coach and great athletes, everyone's really competitive, but also we get along really well. So it's it's fun to come to practice, it's fun to work next to each other. And that's a huge part of doing all these meters that we're doing, which is really what it takes — the training itself.”

3/25/22: Rowing News: Kolher, Davison Earn Bids to World Rowing Cup II

After a windy and busy week of rowing, bids have been awarded to Ben Davison and Kara Kohler to represent the United States at World Rowing Cup II in Poznan, Poland in the men’s and women’s single.

Davison and Kolher held top positions throughout the week with the exception of the time trial where Kohlers’ Texas Rowing Center High Performance teammate Sophia Vitas posted a faster time than her.

Vitas finished second 4.2 seconds behind Kolher in Friday’s A final.

“It was a good race,” Kohler said. “I had a lot of nerves headed into today. It is very nerve-wracking going out there but once the gun goes off you snap right into race mode and the goal was to win today.”
